A bid with money behind it
The official NFR history describes a contest with Oklahoma City that reached a tied PRCA board vote in December 1984. President Shawn Davis cast the deciding vote for Las Vegas. The Las Vegas proposal included guarantees of $1.8 million for competitors and $700,000 for stock contractors. The finals moved to the Thomas & Mack Center in 1985.
The casino and the cowboy world
Benny Binion’s Hall of Fame profile identifies his role in helping bring the NFR to town and his recognition as the PRCA’s ProRodeo Man of the Year in 1985. His involvement shows the importance of relationships connecting the local casino business to the wider rodeo community.
A recurring occasion, not just a building
The history suggests a broader lesson about the sports economy. An arena supplies a place to compete, but a recurring championship can give visitors a reason to return at a particular time of year. To understand that value, follow the event, the people who attend and the businesses that organize around it—not only the capacity of the building.
