BEYOND THE SCOREBOARD

Sport is changing
the city.

The projects, decisions and commercial relationships shaping what Las Vegas becomes next. Status checked October 4, 2026.

01
Under construction

Baseball’s next address

Athletics · planned 2028 opening

The Athletics’ Las Vegas ballpark is under construction at the former Tropicana site. The stated opening target is 2028.

Why it matters

Track the construction programme, transport planning and surrounding development separately. The opening target is not a guarantee that every neighbouring project will open at the same time.

02
Under review

The NBA question

Expansion process · no awarded franchise in this edition

The NBA authorized formal exploration of Las Vegas and Seattle expansion in March 2026. Reuters reported on October 2 that a Las Vegas debut could move to 2029–30, with 2028–29 still under consideration. Ownership and timing remain unresolved in the cited reporting.

Why it matters

A bid, an arena concept and a formally awarded franchise are different milestones. Watch for a league decision before treating a team name, owner or opening date as settled.

03
Announced transition

The end of the Cashman era

Lights farewell · October 17, 2026

Lights FC has announced its final Cashman match against Lexington SC. Its announcement ties the departure to the complex’s sale and the end of the club’s 2026 lease.

Why it matters

The next home for the Lights matters to supporters and to downtown’s event economy. A replacement location is not confirmed by the sources used here.

04
Confirmed launch

More room for women’s sport

PWHL in 2026–27 · Thrill return in 2027

PWHL Las Vegas has published its inaugural season schedule, including a December 6 home opener. The Vegas Thrill has separately announced its return under new owner Michael Landier for the 2027 volleyball season.

Why it matters

Two different leagues add opportunities for local attendance, sponsorship and arena programming. Check each team’s dates before assuming a shared season or schedule.

05
Awarded event

The Final Four comes to town

April 1 and 3, 2028 · Allegiant Stadium

The NCAA lists Las Vegas as the host of the 2028 Men’s Final Four, with UNLV serving as host institution.

Why it matters

A destination event creates demand beyond the two game dates: fan programming, sponsor activation, hotel stays and group travel.

06
Awarded event

A second Super Bowl

Super Bowl LXIII · 2029

The NFL has selected Allegiant Stadium and Las Vegas to host Super Bowl LXIII in 2029, as announced by the LVCVA.

Why it matters

The next questions concern event planning, community programmes and procurement. The hosting award is confirmed; individual event details should follow the official organiser.

Six ways sport drives business

Tickets and hospitality. Hotel stays and restaurants. Sponsorship and naming rights. Broadcast and media. Construction and operations. Youth tournaments and participation.

These channels overlap. A headline “economic impact” figure is not the same as team revenue, new local income or taxpayer return.

Follow the money carefully

Public money and public records

Look to Stadium Authority agendas, contracts, budgets and community-benefit records for the public side of stadium projects. Separate public commitments from the full construction cost and private financing.

Hotels, tickets and the calendar

A sold-out event does not by itself establish citywide gains. Compare the event period with hotel occupancy, room rates, convention demand and visitors who might have come anyway.

Names are commercial assets

A naming sponsor buys contracted rights. It does not necessarily own the venue or its teams. The venue directory keeps these relationships distinct.
