THE LOST CIRCUITS / 1960s–1980s

Before the Strip circuit: Stardust, Caesars and the world of racing

Sports cars in the desert, two F1 title deciders and the American open-wheel races that followed.

Stardust was a real racing chapter

Las Vegas hosted major motorsport well before the Caesars Palace grands prix. At Stardust, John Surtees won the 1966 Can-Am finale and secured the inaugural championship in a Lola T70. Motor Sport’s later account sets that result against his recovery from serious injury and the competition from McLaren and Chaparral. It was a meeting of international drivers and ambitious machinery in the Nevada desert.

More than sports cars

The circuit’s history includes Can-Am, USAC Indy cars and drag racing during its short life. The Stardust hotel connection also places resort investment near the beginning of this story. A hotel name on a sporting venue was already part of Las Vegas long before today’s arena sponsorships, even though ownership and a naming-rights agreement are different arrangements.

The championship comes to a parking lot

At Caesars Palace on October 17, 1981, Alan Jones won the race while Nelson Piquet’s fifth place secured the Formula 1 championship. Carlos Reutemann finished eighth. Alan Henry’s original report preserves the demands of the temporary circuit and the heat, alongside the title contest. The resort had become the location of a season’s decisive afternoon.

The name stayed; the racing changed

Michele Alboreto won the second Caesars Formula 1 race in September 1982. Caesars then hosted CART in 1983 and 1984 on an oval configuration. Those meetings belong in the same venue history, but in different championship histories. The modern Las Vegas Grand Prix is another chapter again, on a different course.
