The venue story
Thomas & Mack opened in 1983 and made a large indoor venue part of the UNLV campus. Its first event was a Rebels basketball game; its gala opening followed in December. The National Finals Rodeo arrived in Las Vegas in 1985, creating an enduring December identity alongside the basketball season.
E. Parry Thomas and Jerome D. Mack were Nevada bankers whose support helped initiate the project. Their names are donor namesakes, rather than a contemporary commercial naming-rights brand. The building also holds memories of professional basketball experiments, hockey and major championship events.
