International Women’s Boxing Hall of Fame / ARCHIVE NOTE

The women who changed the Tyson undercard

Christy Martin and Deirdre Gogarty made a women’s bout impossible to overlook.

Deirdre Gogarty’s International Women’s Boxing Hall of Fame induction profile recalls her six-round fight with Christy Martin on the Mike Tyson–Frank Bruno undercard at the MGM Grand in March 1996. The contest became a breakthrough in the visibility of women’s professional boxing; Martin subsequently appeared on the cover of Sports Illustrated.

The Hall of Fame account restores Gogarty to a story often told only through Martin’s fame. It follows her own path into boxing and her later recognition. A complete Las Vegas fight history needs the undercards and the women whose opportunities were limited, as well as the heavyweight names used to sell the main event.
