Williams belongs in the UNLV chapter of Las Vegas sports. The Giants selected him third overall in the 1986 amateur draft after his college career with the Rebels. He reached the majors a year later and became a long-term presence at third base in San Francisco.
His playing career also included Cleveland and Arizona, where he won a World Series ring in 2001. He finished with 378 major-league home runs. Coaching and management followed his playing days, including managing Washington. His Vegas tie is the university that helped prepare him for professional baseball; the profile does not describe him as a Las Vegas native.
