Jerry Tarkanian

Tarkanian’s UNLV tenure made college basketball a central part of Las Vegas life. Over nineteen seasons, his teams reached four Final Fours and won the 1990 national championship. The regional Hall of Fame records 509 victories during that period, alongside long home winning streaks that helped make attending Rebel games a local ritual.

His career also included Long Beach State, Fresno State and a short spell with the San Antonio Spurs. He entered the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2013 and died in 2015. The broader ArenaLV feature considers both his coaching and the city’s attachment to him, rather than reducing the era to a towel or a single championship photograph.
